Earthquakes shake West Java; sources identified as inland and offshore

West Java, Indonesia, experienced tectonic earthquakes in the Sukabumi and Cianjur regions during the evening of July 30 and the early morning of July 31, 2026. The seismic activity originated from distinct sources, with one quake occurring inland and the other offshore.

The Cianjur region was shaken by a Magnitude 1.9 earthquake at 3:06 AM on Friday. According to Hartanto, head of the BMKG's Class II Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Center in Tangerang, the epicenter was located 6 kilometers southwest of Cianjur Regency at a depth of 18 kilometers. This shallow earthquake was triggered by active fault activity and was felt with an intensity of I-II MMI in Cianjur, meaning it was perceived by a few people indoors and caused light objects to sway.

Earlier, on Thursday evening at 6:17 PM, a Magnitude 4.1 earthquake jolted Sukabumi Regency. Its epicenter was situated 86 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi Regency in the sea, at a depth of 39 kilometers. Hartanto explained this shallow quake resulted from subduction activity, where the Indo-Australian plate plunges beneath the Eurasian plate, placing its origin within a megathrust zone.

The tremors were felt more strongly in Ciracap, Sukabumi, at an intensity of II-III MMI, described as a strong vibration indoors, similar to a passing truck. In Pelabuhan Ratu, the intensity was II MMI. As of the report, no damage to buildings has been reported from either earthquake.
