Ebola outbreak in DR Congo claims over 860 lives

The Democratic Republic of Congo is grappling with a persistent and severe Ebola outbreak, as the government confirms a rising death toll and an increasing number of infections. Authorities have reported a total of 2,181 confirmed cases of the deadly virus.

According to the latest government figures, the number of fatalities has reached 864. In the 24 hours leading up to Thursday, health officials recorded 56 new infections and 36 additional deaths, underscoring the ongoing intensity of the epidemic. The outbreak is particularly concentrated in the eastern regions of the country.

Despite the official figures, the World Health Organization (WHO) suggests that the actual number of cases and deaths is likely higher than reported. The WHO anticipates a significant number of unreported cases, a common challenge in containing outbreaks in remote or conflict-affected areas.
