Ebonyi inaugurates task force to tackle illegal mining

Ebonyi State, Nigeria, has launched a new task force to bring order to its mining sector. The government inaugurated the body on Thursday, aiming to strengthen regulations, stop illegal mining, and prevent revenue losses.

Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, Chinedu Nkah, stated the task force will oversee mining and quarry operations across the state's three senatorial districts. Its mandate includes ensuring operators adhere to laws, safety standards, and Community Development Agreements. Nkah specifically warned against abandoning excavated pits, unsafe practices, under-declaring minerals, and illegal transportation, especially at night.

The task force will also verify revenue payments and clearances for mineral-bearing trucks. The government stressed the importance of solid minerals to the state's economy.
