Ebonyi PWDs protest alleged neglect, eviction threat, demand inclusion

Members of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) in Nigeria's Ebonyi State took to the streets of Abakaliki on Thursday, staging a peaceful protest to demand improved welfare and greater inclusion from the state government. The group voiced concerns over alleged neglect and an imminent eviction from their long-standing secretariat.

We are demanding greater inclusion and improved welfare from the state government.

Carrying placards with various messages, the protesters specifically called for monthly financial support, enhanced welfare packages, and the swift assent to the Disability Bill recently passed by the Ebonyi State House of Assembly. A significant point of contention was an alleged eviction notice targeting their secretariat, a facility they have occupied for over a decade. They claim the notice was issued by the Commissioners for Health and Women Affairs and Social Development without prior consultation.

The alleged quit notice was issued without prior consultation with the association, urging the government to engage the group in dialogue.

Comrade Friday Nwovu, the state Chairman of JONAPWD, lamented the continued marginalization of persons with disabilities despite repeated appeals. He urged Governor Francis Nwifuru to intervene, emphasizing the importance of including people with disabilities in governance, appointments, and empowerment programs. Nwovu stressed the need for dialogue and expressed hope that the governor would approve monthly subventions and extend welfare packages to members.

The Disability Bill has received the governor’s approval and will soon complete the final assent process.

Despite their grievances, the protesters affirmed their continued support for the Nwifuru administration ahead of the 2027 general elections. Responding on behalf of the governor, Chief of Staff Prof. Emmanuel Echiegu assured the group that the Disability Bill had received the governor's approval and was nearing final assent. He also highlighted that over 300 persons with disabilities have been enrolled in the state's health insurance agency for free healthcare services. Echiegu promised that the governor would meet with JONAPWD leaders and relevant commissioners to find lasting solutions to the issues raised.
