Ecuador Allocates Over $1.3 Million for Education System Preparedness Against El Niño

Ecuador is investing more than $1.3 million to safeguard its education system against the anticipated effects of the El Niño phenomenon. The Ministry of Education, Sport, and Culture announced the comprehensive strategy, which emphasizes prevention, mitigation, and preparedness to ensure the continuity of educational services.

The initiative prioritizes 264 educational institutions for preventive infrastructure work, selected based on technical criteria related to exposure, vulnerability, and the recurrence of adverse events. This investment, totaling $1,044,000, includes repairs to roofs, addressing leaks, improving piping and gutters, waterproofing, and enhancing drainage systems. "Every resource allocated to prevention is an investment in the safety and well-being of our students, teachers, and families. Our commitment is clear: protect, prevent, and ensure that education does not stop in the face of possible adverse events," stated Gilda Alcívar, the minister responsible for the sector.

An additional $310,000 has been allocated for the procurement of flood mitigation kits. These kits, equipped with essential tools such as motor pumps, high-pressure washers, electric generators, and accessories, will be distributed to high-risk areas identified through technical assessments. Prevention efforts also extend to direct community engagement within educational institutions, focusing on cleaning drainage systems, waste removal, and preventing water accumulation. Coordinated actions with the Ministry of Public Health are also underway to prevent vector-borne diseases.

The Ministry of Education operates under a National Action Plan for the Education System in response to El Niño, integrated with the RESPONDEc-Educ framework. This plan outlines measures for prevention, preparation, response, recovery, and educational continuity. Following an increase in the alert level from Yellow to Orange in 17 of Ecuador's 24 provinces, the Ministry has intensified its monitoring of educational institutions in risk zones and strengthened coordination with relevant authorities.
