Three Colombians Among Dead in Rio Helicopter Crash

A helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday claimed the lives of three Colombian tourists, identified as Lida Rocío Cubillos, her daughter Wendy Manrique Cubillos, and granddaughter Sofía Murillo Manrique. The family was in the Brazilian city to celebrate a 15th birthday. The victims were part of a larger group, with other relatives scheduled to take the same tour later.

The helicopter, operated by a company offering scenic flights, crashed in a densely wooded area near the Vista Chinesa viewpoint. Firefighters faced significant challenges accessing the site to recover the bodies. The difficult terrain and the fact that two bodies were "totally incinerated" have complicated the identification process, according to Colombian Consul General Diana Páez.

Rio de Janeiro's Civil Police confirmed the bodies have been moved to the forensic institute for identification. They will be cross-referenced with flight registration data. Investigators are also awaiting a report from the Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents on the crash's cause. The impact caused a fire at the scene, requiring specialized firefighting units.
