Ecuador Calls Richard Carapaz's Tour de France Performance 'Historic'

The Ecuadorian government has declared Richard Carapaz's performance in the Tour de France "historic," celebrating his achievements in the prestigious cycling race. Carapaz, known as 'La Locomotora del Carchi,' secured both the King of the Mountains classification and the "supercombativo" award, recognizing him as the most aggressive rider.

This remarkable showing surpasses even Carapaz's initial goals for the Tour, which included winning a stage and contending for the mountains jersey. While he aimed for the general classification, his pursuit of mountain points ultimately led him to an eighth-place finish overall. The Viceministry of Sport officially recognized his accomplishments via its X account, sharing a video of Carapaz receiving his awards.

At 33, this is Carapaz's second time clinching the King of the Mountains and most combative rider titles in the Tour de France, having previously achieved this feat in 2024. His career includes a third-place finish in the 2021 Tour, a Giro d'Italia victory in 2019, and podium finishes in the Vuelta a España. Carapaz is among a select group of cyclists who have led all three Grand Tours.
