Ecuador captures key weapons supplier for Chone Killers gang

Ecuadorian security forces have apprehended alias 'Samir' in Daule, a key figure accused of supplying weapons to the notorious Los Chone Killers criminal organization. Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo announced the capture on August 9, 2026, emphasizing the success of a coordinated operation between the armed forces and the National Intelligence Center.

The military intervention in the Patria Nueva sector of Daule, based on intelligence, identified 'Samir' as a high-priority strategic target. During the operation, authorities discovered 26 packages of suspected KRYPPY, 11 envelopes of suspected cocaine, a .38 caliber revolver, and four rounds of ammunition. The armed forces also linked 'Samir' to drug trafficking, extortion, armed robbery, and kidnapping.

Loffredo described 'Samir' as a "provider of death," noting his collaboration with alias 'Pan de Piña,' who was arrested shortly before. The minister asserted that the security forces would continue to pursue and apprehend any individuals attempting to replace detained leaders, sending a strong warning to criminal groups. "Both are now behind bars," Loffredo stated, referring to the recent arrests of key figures.

This significant capture occurs in the wake of the U.S. designating Los Chone Killers as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist on July 1, 2026. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio cited the group's collaboration with Mexican cartels in drug trafficking to finance terrorist and criminal activities, underscoring the international dimension of the fight against organized crime in the region.
