Ecuador proposes strengthening international cooperation against crime at UN

Ecuador's Foreign Minister Roberto Kury is set to present a proposal to the United Nations Security Council aimed at bolstering international cooperation to combat transnational organized crime and illegal mining. The initiative highlights Ecuador's stance on the critical need for improved resource management to counter illicit economies fueled by criminal organizations.

Kury, currently in New York, will participate in a Security Council debate titled 'The governance of natural resources: foundation of peace, security and prosperity.' During his address, he will advocate for enhanced international collaboration, supply chain traceability, and stronger mechanisms to promote peace, security, and sustainable development.

In addition to his Security Council participation, Kury is scheduled to meet with the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, and the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed. As part of his agenda in the United States, the foreign minister will also visit Ecuador's Consulate in New York to assess the needs of Ecuadorian citizens and oversee the functioning of service areas.

The proposal comes as Ecuador faces significant challenges from organized crime, particularly linked to illegal mining operations that often exploit natural resources and contribute to environmental degradation and violence. Strengthening international partnerships is seen as crucial for Ecuador to effectively address these complex issues.
