Ecuador: Suspect in Lizeth Bunshi disappearance ordered into preventive detention

A judge has ordered preventive detention for Cristian Gonzalo V. L., the main suspect in the involuntary disappearance case of Lizeth Esthela B. M., also known as Lizeth Bunshi.

The decision was made on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, during a hearing requested by the State Attorney General's Office. Prosecutors presented evidence, including closed-circuit camera footage and witness testimonies, to support their case. They allege that the suspect was the last person seen with Bunshi near the Machángara River in Quito.

The judge approved the prosecution's request, imposing 90 days for the fiscal investigation. The investigation began after Lizeth Bunshi was reported missing on July 18, 2026. Specialized prosecutors gathered initial evidence that led to the arrest warrant for Cristian Gonzalo V. L., which was executed early Wednesday morning.

Lizeth Bunshi, a stylist and mother of a nine-year-old son, has been missing since July 18. Her family reported her disappearance after she left her home in El Tingo, Los Chillos Valley, and lost contact.
