Ecuadorian electoral judge admits complaint against indigenous party for campaign accounts

An electoral judge in Ecuador has initiated proceedings against two key figures of the indigenous movement Pachakutik over alleged campaign finance irregularities. The complaint, brought forth by the National Electoral Council (CNE), targets Guillermo Churuchumbi, the legal representative of Pachakutik, and Carlos Sánchez Villagrán, the party's finance chief. The CNE alleges violations related to the financing and spending of campaign accounts during the 2024 referendum. Electoral law stipulates sanctions for political parties that fail to present proper financial reports, including fines or suspension of political rights. Pachakutik legislator Mariana Yumbay decried the move as political persecution, asserting it aims to weaken the party ahead of the November local elections. Former President Rafael Correa also criticized the action, linking it to broader political maneuvering.
