Edo assembly impeaches suspended speaker

Blessing Agbebaku, the former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, has been formally impeached by the assembly. The impeachment follows a period of controversy and his earlier suspension. The lawmakers stated that Agbebaku's resignation notice had not been officially presented or documented, leading to the decision to convert his suspension into an impeachment.

The motion for Agbebaku's formal impeachment was put forward by the majority leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by Ahmed Waziri. The current Speaker, Yekini Idaiye, who was elected after Agbebaku's initial suspension, stressed that the impeachment was a formal proceeding and not a resignation. He indicated that the impeachment notice had garnered the support of 17 members of the House.

Following the impeachment, the House has issued a directive for Agbebaku to return all government property currently in his possession. The Speaker warned that security agencies would be involved if the former Speaker fails to comply with this directive. This development comes eight days after the initial controversy that led to Agbebaku's suspension and subsequent impeachment.
