Eduardo Bolsonaro calls STF ruling 'baseless,' claims it targets his election bid

Former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro has declared that a Supreme Court (STF) ruling against him is baseless and designed to bar him from participating in the current year's elections. He asserted that the trial did not adhere to due process and was "without head or tail."

Bolsonaro was unanimously convicted by the STF's First Panel for coercion during legal proceedings. The accusation involved orchestrating an attempt to intimidate the Brazilian judiciary, allegedly to prevent the trial of a coup plot linked to his father, Jair Bolsonaro, who has already been convicted. Eduardo Bolsonaro intended to run as the first alternate for the presidential candidate of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo State (Alesp), André do Prado.

In a statement, Eduardo Bolsonaro argued that he had never been legally summoned and criticized the rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes. "Any sentence without respect for due process is null, and, after so many international defeats, even Moraes knows that. That's why the real objective of this trial without head or tail is just one: to remove my name from the elections," the former deputy stated. Having lived in the United States since February of the previous year, the conviction renders him "ficha suja" (a term for a disqualified candidate) and ineligible for elections for up to eight years, although the decision is subject to appeal.
