Eduardo Paes receives support from former allies of Douglas Ruas in Rio

In a significant political shift in Rio de Janeiro, former allies of Douglas Ruas, president of the State Legislative Assembly, have announced their support for Eduardo Paes, the former mayor of Rio de Janeiro. This alignment comes as the parties of these former allies maintain neutrality in the state's election, allowing them to back candidates independently.

Rogério Lisboa, the former mayor of Nova Iguaçu, publicly declared his support for Paes, explaining his decision was driven by the state's pressing need for experienced leadership with proven results. In a video shared on social media, Lisboa stated, "This decision does not involve questioning the correctness or the will to act of the other main contender, Deputy Douglas Ruas. It was made based on the urgency our state has in solving its serious problems. In moments like these, we need experienced names with proven results at the head of the Executive. [...] It is not time to take risks or make bets, even if full of good intentions."

Lisboa had previously announced his withdrawal from the electoral slate in July, prior to his party's official declaration of neutrality. Alongside Lisboa, the current mayor of Nova Iguaçu, Dudu Reina, also declared support for Paes. This backing consolidates Paes's candidacy, securing the support of approximately nine out of thirteen mayors in the Baixada Fluminense region, an area where Bolsonaro's political movement holds considerable influence. While Paes has the endorsement of President Lula, he has largely avoided nationalizing the election in his regional campaigns.

The move also suggests a potential alignment between federal deputy Doutor Luizinho, a key figure in the Progressistas (PP) party, and Paes's candidacy. Although Luizinho has not officially declared his support, his actions indicate a leaning towards Paes. Meanwhile, Ruas's campaign has faced setbacks, including the withdrawal of his Senate candidates, Cláudio Castro and Márcio Canella, following police operations. Despite most of União Brasil's deputies supporting Ruas, signs of defections are emerging.
