Eero Erkkilä, Renowned Church Musician, Dies at 85

Musiikkineuvos Eero Erkkilä, a prominent figure in Finnish church music, passed away on June 13, 2026, in Hämeenlinna at the age of 85. Born in Lohtaja in 1941, Erkkilä's exceptional musical talent was evident from a young age, leading him to study church music at the Sibelius Academy.

Erkkilä began his professional career as a choirmaster at Töölö Church before being appointed to the prestigious position of choirmaster at Helsinki Cathedral in 1969 at a remarkably young age. There, he collaborated with organist Tapani Valsta. In 1970, he established the Helsinki Cathedral Choir, with which he performed numerous large-scale choral works, demonstrating a conducting skill comparable to that of an experienced symphony conductor.

Beyond his work as a conductor, Erkkilä was also a prolific composer. His first Vexilla Regis oratorio led to the founding of the Lohtaja Church Music Festival in 1979, which later featured his opera "Kalastaja" and the choral work "Salvator." His talents extended to being a soloist singer, holding a position at the Finnish National Opera from 1968. He performed a wide range of roles, including Alfredo in "La Traviata" and Don Jose in "Carmen," and appeared at the Savonlinna Opera Festival.

Erkkilä's active career was cut short by a serious heart condition in the late 1980s. Despite this, he witnessed his sons and grandsons continue his musical legacy. The early death of his eldest son, Jari, in 2001 was a profound sorrow. However, his sons Janne and Jere, along with Jari's three talented sons, have carried forward his musical heritage. A longtime friend and colleague, Pekka Salomaa, remembered Erkkilä as "the fairest man I have had the pleasure of knowing."
