EFE Agency Defends Freedom of Information in Morocco Coverage After Journalists Expelled

Moroccan authorities expelled journalists from the Spanish news agency EFE and RTVE who were covering the border situation near Ceuta. The reporters were asked to leave the town of Fnideq (Castillejos) without any explanation or justification from officials.

A representative from Morocco's Ministry of Interior informed the journalists they were "carrying out instructions" when asking them to leave. The EFE and RTVE teams were in the area to report on social media calls for a large-scale crossing at the border with Ceuta, which had been publicized for Saturday.

Miguel Ángel Oliver, president of EFE, appealed to Moroccan authorities to respect the "responsible and rigorous" practice of journalism. He emphasized that this commitment to accurate reporting is central to EFE's identity, both in Spain and internationally, including in Morocco, where the agency has operated for sixty years.

EFE has attempted to contact Morocco's Ministry of Interior for a response and has also reached out to the director of Communication for the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, who stated he is working to clarify the situation.
