Egypt adopts comprehensive vision for UN reform

Egypt is championing a broad vision for United Nations reform, seeking to bolster the capacity of international financial institutions and multilateral development banks. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty articulated this stance, emphasizing the need for accessible and sustainable financing for developing countries.

The reform agenda also targets the debt crisis, aiming to facilitate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and support climate action without placing additional burdens on nations already struggling financially. Abdelatty made these remarks during a meeting with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed in New York.

Egypt adopts a comprehensive vision for reforming the United Nations and strengthening the ability of international financial institutions and multilateral development banks to provide affordable and sustainable financing for developing countries, while addressing the debt crisis to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and support climate action efforts without imposing additional burdens on developing nations.

During their discussion, the two officials explored avenues to enhance Egypt-UN cooperation and exchanged views on pressing regional and international matters. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast support for the multilateral international system, its commitment to international law, and the UN Charter. He specifically commended UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Deputy Secretary-General Mohammed for their leadership.

The Foreign Minister also highlighted the UN's crucial role in maintaining global peace and security. He stressed the importance of adhering to international law, humanitarian law, and human rights law amidst ongoing conflicts, citing Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank as a particular concern. Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's initiatives to de-escalate regional crises and promote diplomatic solutions, underscoring the necessity of collective action to tackle global challenges and foster stability.

Mohammed, in turn, acknowledged Egypt's significant role in supporting UN endeavors both regionally and internationally. She praised the country's active contributions to conflict resolution, stability promotion, peacekeeping, and humanitarian efforts within its regional spheres. The UN Deputy Secretary-General affirmed the organization's dedication to deepening its partnership with Egypt across various sectors.
