Eight arrested in Greece over recent fires, including attempted arson cases

Greek authorities have arrested a total of eight individuals in connection with recent fires that broke out in various parts of the country, including Crete, Evia, Laconia, and Paros. The arrests were made by the Investigative Units for Combating Arson Crimes (A.K.A.E.E.).

Of the eight detained, two face charges for attempted arson with intent, while the remaining six are accused of causing fires through negligence. In Heraklion, Crete, two men aged 26 and 24 were arrested for allegedly attempting to set fire to a forest area. They were apprehended in the act and are awaiting their appearance before the judicial authorities.

In Eretria, Evia, a 77-year-old man was arrested for allegedly starting a fire near his home while using an electric metal cutting tool. The fire spread to dry grass on a plot of land. He was fined and is facing legal proceedings. Similarly, in Agaranos, Gytheio, Laconia, a 47-year-old man was arrested after allegedly causing a fire while performing hot work with a grinder. The fire quickly escalated.

On the island of Paros, a fire erupted at the island's waste management facility and spread to nearby low vegetation. In connection with this incident, four individuals were arrested and collectively fined. The investigations into the causes and circumstances of these fires are continuing.
