Eight critically injured in Omis fire, some with burns on 70% of body

Eight individuals are in critical condition, battling for their lives following a devastating fire in the Omis region of Croatia. Some patients have sustained severe burns covering up to 70% of their bodies. The catastrophic blaze has left at least one person dead and numerous injured.

Medical professionals at KBC Split have treated 40 patients since the fire erupted. Of these, 14 required hospitalization. The situation is particularly dire for those with extensive burns. Three adult patients, aged between 18 and 46, were transferred from Split to Zagreb for specialized care. They are all intubated, on mechanical ventilation, and require medication to maintain blood pressure, according to Dr. Tihana Magdić Turković, head of anesthesiology and intensive care at KBC Sestre milosrdnice's trauma clinic.

These three patients have burns covering 40% to 70% of their bodies. Doctors are conducting further tests to assess for smoke inhalation or other injuries. Meanwhile, four other patients remain in intensive care at KBC Split, with their conditions also life-threatening. One patient's condition has worsened, increasing the number on respirators to eight.

Injuries include burns to the torso, head, neck, and limbs, sustained from direct flames, smoke inhalation, and falls during escape attempts. The fire, which started near Lokva Rogoznica, spread towards Omis, threatening homes and other structures. The body of a young person was found in the burnt area, though their identity has not been officially confirmed.

The injuries are mainly burns – burns to the trunk, head, neck, extremities. It is difficult to estimate their prognosis, but we monitor the condition day by day and make a plan for their treatment.
