Eighteen-year-old killed, six injured after bus plows into pedestrians in Mar del Plata

An 18-year-old woman has died after a bus lost control and struck pedestrians in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Guadalupe Oriana Merlos was identified as the sole fatality from the incident, which occurred on Monday near the city's boardwalk.

Six other individuals were injured and are currently receiving treatment at the General de Agudos Hospital. The bus, operated by line 532, reportedly veered off its designated public transport lane and onto the sidewalk, hitting the pedestrians. The driver of the bus has been detained as investigations proceed.

Initial investigations suggest a possible mechanical failure, specifically a malfunction in the bus's steering system, as the cause of the accident. The driver is expected to provide a statement, and a mechanical inspection of the vehicle is scheduled. A forensic autopsy on Merlos is also planned. The prosecutor's office has opened a case for culpable homicide and injuries.
