EKEDP blames vandalism, transmission upgrades for Festac outages

Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) has attributed persistent power supply challenges in Festac Town, Amuwo Odofin, and nearby communities to a combination of national transmission upgrades and repeated vandalism of underground distribution cables. The company stated that while improvement works at the national transmission level are the primary drivers of recent outages, the situation is exacerbated by vandalism, which is most frequent in the Festac area.

EKEDP announced that a new Festac 3 feeder, originating from the Ojo Transmission Station, has been completed and commissioned. This feeder is intended to offer an alternative power source to Festac Town, with its energization awaiting final load balancing and approvals from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). Additionally, electricity supply on the Festac 1 33kV feeder has been partially restored after a faulty underground cable was isolated, and repair work is ongoing daily.

The company emphasized its investment of several hundred million naira in strengthening the Festac electricity network. Despite these efforts and ongoing repair work, residents continue to experience disruptions, highlighting the complex interplay between infrastructure development, national grid stability, and the persistent issue of vandalism impacting service delivery.
