El-Rufai Granted N200m Bail on Corruption Charges, Remains in ICPC Custody

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has granted bail to former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, a significant development in the corruption charges brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The bail is set at N200 million, a substantial sum reflecting the seriousness of the allegations. However, El-Rufai will not be immediately released, as the court has stipulated that he must remain in ICPC custody until all stringent bail conditions are met.

These conditions are indeed extensive and designed to ensure El-Rufai's compliance with the legal process. They include the requirement for two sureties, one of whom must be a civil servant of Grade Level 15 or above, and the other a recognized traditional ruler. Both sureties must deposit their passports with the court. Furthermore, El-Rufai himself is prohibited from making any public statements concerning the case, a measure likely intended to prevent interference with the proceedings or public opinion.

The legal proceedings have seen some procedural shifts, with the charges initially filed against El-Rufai and Amadu Sule, Managing Director of TMDK Terminal Limited, being amended. Sule has been dropped from the case, narrowing the trial to focus exclusively on the former governor. While El-Rufai's legal team has declined to comment, his son Bello El-Rufai has confirmed the bail grant. The situation remains fluid, with El-Rufai's freedom contingent on meeting these demanding conditions, underscoring the gravity of the corruption allegations.
