El Salvador’s Foreign Ministry expands efforts to protect and reintegrate migrants

El Salvador’s Foreign Ministry is seeking to make reintegration more than a physical return, placing livelihoods and future opportunities at the center of its migration policy.

The ministry highlighted the approach during a meeting of the executive committee for the “Protection for People on the Move” project. The project focuses on protecting migrants, supporting people who return to El Salvador and preventing irregular migration.

Patricia Nathaly Godínez, the vice minister for Diaspora and Human Mobility, said returnees should be able to recover their means of living, build skills and access training, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

The initiative brings together the Foreign Ministry, the International Organization for Migration, the World Food Programme and the United Nations Population Fund. National institutions, municipalities and international organizations are expected to coordinate their responses to migrants and vulnerable communities.
