A 78-year-old man in Pingtung County, Taiwan, narrowly escaped a dangerous fall into a deep drainage ditch, thanks to a series of fortunate events and a swift rescue. The incident occurred on the afternoon of the 7th when the man, identified by the surname Zhang, lost his footing while inspecting drainage construction near the Zhen'an Temple.

He tumbled into the ditch, falling about 2 meters and becoming trapped among sharp steel bars. Injured and unable to move, he faced the immediate threat of dehydration under the scorching sun. In his desperation, he couldn't even reach his phone, which had fallen nearby.

However, a seemingly inexplicable event occurred: his mobile phone automatically connected and activated its speakerphone. This allowed his calls for help to be heard when a friend happened to call, seeking to find him. The friend, alerted to the emergency, immediately contacted the fire department.

Firefighters from the Checheng station responded promptly, assessing the situation as a confined space rescue. The man had a laceration on his head and severe pain in his limbs. Rescuers carefully secured him with ropes and a ladder before efficiently lifting him to safety. He was then transported to Hengchun Tourism Hospital for treatment.
