Torrential rain devastates Japan's Chiba Prefecture, stranding thousands and causing at least 2 deaths

Chiba Prefecture in Japan is grappling with the aftermath of extreme heavy rainfall that struck on the evening of August 13th, causing widespread flooding and significant transportation chaos. Record-breaking downpours have inundated the region, leading to at least two confirmed deaths and multiple injuries.

Narita Airport became a scene of disruption, with around 7,000 passengers stranded overnight due to the suspension of rail and road services. Thousands of other residents were forced to take shelter in government buildings, including the Chiba city and prefectural offices, and the Makuhari Messe convention center.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued various levels of heavy rain and landslide warnings for multiple areas in Chiba. The extreme weather was attributed to the convergence of warm, moist air and a cold front, prompting the highest level of heavy rain special warnings for 14 municipalities.

In addition to the stranded travelers and fatalities, the heavy rains caused power outages affecting over 35,000 households. Emergency services are continuing search and rescue operations, with reports of individuals found floating in flooded roads and others trapped in submerged vehicles.
