Elderly Man with Dementia Lost for Over a Day, Found Searching for Mother in Taipei Building, Police Assist Return Home

Taipei police successfully reunited an elderly man suffering from mild dementia with his worried family after he went missing for more than 26 hours. The man had wandered away from home and, disoriented, mistakenly entered a residential building in the Daan District, attempting to find his mother.

Building management noticed the man's confused state and alerted the police. Officers from the Wolong Street Police Station arrived at the scene and found the man distressed and repeatedly asking to go upstairs to find his mother, but unable to provide any specific details about her or the unit she lived in. The police were able to determine that the man had been reported missing by his family over 20 hours prior.

Upon contacting the man's family, they rushed to the location and were relieved to find him safe. The family expressed their gratitude to the police for their assistance in ensuring the elderly man's safe return. This incident highlights the challenges faced by families caring for individuals with dementia and memory loss.

In response to such situations, the Daan Precinct is urging families to take preventative measures. They recommend applying for "love bracelets" or ensuring that clothing is labeled with emergency contact information. These simple steps can significantly aid police and concerned citizens in quickly identifying individuals who may be lost or in distress, thereby ensuring their safety and facilitating a swift reunion with their loved ones.
