Elderly Woman Rescued After Falling Into Well in Uruguay

An 84-year-old woman was rescued on Wednesday after falling into a well, known as an aljibe, in the Durazno department of Uruguay. The accident occurred around midday, according to police information.

The well was approximately 1.20 meters in diameter and about six to seven meters deep. Upon arrival, emergency services found the woman holding onto the bucket chain, with her head above the roughly two meters of water at the bottom.

Police officers, with assistance from UTE personnel who provided a ladder, managed to extract the woman. One officer descended the ladder, secured her with a harness, and then pulled her to safety with the help of other officers. She was transported by ambulance to a local clinic and then to Durazno Hospital.

Medical staff at the hospital determined she had signs of hypothermia and placed her under observation. The incident highlights the dangers associated with old wells and the swift response of emergency services.
