Electoral prosecutors seek to block candidate using 'Enéas' and 'Bolsonaro' names

Brazil's Electoral Public Prosecutor's Office has requested the disqualification of a federal deputy candidate from São Paulo who intends to appear on ballots as Thiago Neves Enéas Bolsonaro.

The candidate, a councilman from Panorama in São Paulo state, claims to resemble the late federal deputy Enéas Ferreira Carneiro and shares the "patriotic and visionary positioning" of both Carneiro and former President Jair Bolsonaro. He wishes to use their names, alongside his own, on the voting machines.

The use of 'Bolsonaro' on the ballot by a candidate who does not belong to the former president's family, nor has the surname in his civil registry, can generate vote migration and cause an imbalance in the election.

However, the prosecution argues that the candidate bears no relation to either Enéas or Jair Bolsonaro, nor are they his parents. They contend that incorporating these surnames could mislead voters, potentially causing an imbalance in the election. "The use of 'Bolsonaro' on the ballot by a candidate who does not belong to the former president's family, nor has the surname in his civil registry, can generate vote migration and cause an imbalance in the election," stated prosecutor Paulo Taubemblatt in his petition.

The candidate's lawyer, Cristiano Vilela, disputes the prosecution's claims. He argues that the names are presented in parentheses, negating any possibility of confusion regarding family ties. Vilela also asserts that the candidate is widely known in his community by these nicknames due to his physical appearance and ideological stance.
