Electric and hybrid car sales in Argentina surge 340% amid industry decline

Despite a general downturn in Argentina's automotive industry, sales of hybrid and electric vehicles have experienced explosive growth. In the first half of the year, registrations for electrified light vehicles soared by 339.4% compared to the same period in 2025, reaching 42,238 units. This surge occurred even as the overall market for new vehicles saw a contraction of 11.1%.

Electrified vehicles now represent a substantial 15.2% of the total market share, according to the latest report from the Automotive Market Information and Statistics System (Siomaa). This growing segment is diverse, encompassing technologies from mild assistance systems to fully electric powertrains. Conventional non-plug-in hybrids (HEV) remain the most popular choice, accounting for 55% of electrified sales with 23,222 units registered. These vehicles combine combustion engines with electric motors, recharging their batteries through regenerative braking and the vehicle's operation.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) have emerged as the second most significant technology, with sales jumping an impressive 5886% to 8,979 units, capturing 21% of the electrified market. Unlike conventional hybrids, PHEVs can be charged from an external power source and offer a greater electric-only driving range. Mild hybrids (MHEV) followed, representing 15% of sales with 6,160 units and showing a 281.4% year-on-year increase. In these models, the electric system primarily assists the combustion engine rather than propelling the vehicle independently.

Pure electric vehicles (EVs), while still holding a smaller share at 9% of the electrified market, demonstrated the most dramatic growth. Their registrations increased by 884% to 3,877 units, up from just 394 in the first half of 2025. This rapid expansion has also reshuffled the top sellers list, with the Ford Territory leading the pack among electrified models in the first semester.
