Enel Receives Support in Meeting Over Greater SP Contract Annulment

Enel's efforts to prevent the cancellation of its contract in Greater São Paulo encountered mixed results during a meeting with the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). While the company did not succeed in halting the annulment proceedings, it received support from some stakeholders. Gregorio Maglio, the mayor of Pirapora de Bom Jesus and president of Cioeste, a consortium of 14 municipalities in the region, advocated for Enel's continued role as the energy concessionaire. The meeting addressed the potential termination of Enel's contract due to numerous complaints about service failures, particularly following adverse weather events. Enel is seeking to suspend the annulment process. Maglio's defense of the Italian company was echoed by representatives from the Enel São Paulo Consumer Council (Concelpa) and Ricardo Brandão, executive director of the Brazilian Association of Electric Energy Distributors (Abradee). Brandão argued that Aneel is using indicators not stipulated in the contract or legislation, and that annulling the contract could create legal uncertainty. Despite these arguments, Aneel rejected Enel's appeal and decided to proceed with the annulment process.
