Enugu State Reaffirms Commitment to HIV Response Through Partnerships

Enugu State is strengthening its response to HIV/AIDS, with the government reaffirming its dedication to fighting the epidemic. Health Commissioner George Ugwu met with the Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN) to discuss ongoing efforts. He emphasized Governor Peter Mbah's administration's prioritization of resident health and well-being, ensuring access to essential healthcare services for all.

The commissioner detailed significant health sector reforms, including the construction of Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres in every ward and expanded access to quality care. He noted improvements in disease surveillance systems, healthcare workforce development, and collaborations with development partners. These initiatives aim to enhance HIV testing, treatment, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, and viral load monitoring.

Furthermore, the government has intensified public health education and community engagement to reduce new HIV infections and combat stigma. The ministry assured NEPWHAN of its continued support, calling for stronger collaboration among government agencies, civil society, development partners, and affected communities. Ugwu stressed that collective action, trust, and shared responsibility are vital for achieving healthier communities and improving the quality of life for people living with HIV.

NEPWHAN's State Coordinator, Lilian Agbo, appealed for deeper collaboration, commending the ministry's efforts in providing access to prevention, treatment, and support services. She advocated for enhanced community-based interventions, reduced stigma, and increased public awareness. "We are here to appeal and ensure that people living with HIV continue to receive quality healthcare and social support," Agbo stated.
