Environment Ministry inspects collapsed wastewater systems in Panama Oeste

Panama's Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) has launched an inspection of nine severely neglected wastewater treatment systems in the La Chorrera district of Panama Oeste. These facilities, abandoned for more than twenty years, have collapsed and are now a major source of environmental concern, significantly impacting local water bodies.

Technical teams from MiAmbiente are meticulously gathering information to create a detailed diagnosis of the contamination crisis inherited in the region. The inspection covers residential areas including Vista Alegre, Villa Cristina, Hacienda Los Robles, Crystal Park, Victoria Hills, Las Mendozas, Los Flamingos, Green Park, and Ciudad del Futuro. The state of these infrastructures is particularly alarming as they are located upstream from the Trapichito drinking water plant intake, posing a direct threat to the water supply.

This initiative is a direct response to the growing concern over pollution and is guided by Executive Decree No. 1, published on November 26, 2025. This decree regulates environmental liabilities and provides the legal framework to identify and address infrastructure posing risks to the environment. MiAmbiente plans to use the technical report to delineate responsibilities, establish priorities with the IDAAN (National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers), local residents, and private developers to create a roadmap for rectifying these critical wastewater issues.
