Panama City to Invest $15 Million in Plaza de la Democracia Renovation

Panama City's Mayor's Office is set to embark on a significant revitalization project for the Plaza de la Democracia in the San Francisco district, with plans to invest $15 million. The renovation is slated to commence in 2027, funded by property taxes, and aims to transform the currently underutilized public space into a vibrant hub.

The project, officially titled "Plaza de la Democracia-Bahía Viva," also known as the Paitilla park, received unanimous approval during a public hearing. The comprehensive plan encompasses the entire 1.2-hectare area. Key features include the development of extensive green spaces, pedestrian walkways, dedicated bike paths, and scenic viewing decks offering vistas of the bay.

A notable component of the renovation is the construction of an underground parking garage designed to accommodate approximately 90 vehicles. This subterranean facility will free up surface areas, allowing for a greater expansion of public use spaces and enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the plaza.

The initiative seeks to re-establish the plaza's connection with the waterfront, improve its relationship with the Matasnillo River and the bay, increase tree cover, and mitigate the urban heat island effect. Furthermore, the project aligns with a broader municipal strategy to reclaim coastal public spaces and bolster their capacity to withstand flooding and other climate change-related challenges.
