Environment Ministry Removes Illegal Fence at Cerro Gaital Natural Monument

Panama's Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) has taken decisive action by removing a fence that was illegally erected within the access road servitude of the Cerro Gaital Natural Monument in El Valle de Antón, Coclé province. This preventative measure is designed to thwart illegal land occupations and maintain unobstructed access to the protected area.

The operation was carried out by the MiAmbiente Regional Directorate in Coclé, working in conjunction with park rangers from the National System of Protected Areas (Sinap) assigned to the monument. Ensuring that access routes to natural areas remain clear is crucial for facilitating the movement of park rangers and supporting their ongoing patrol, surveillance, and environmental protection duties within Cerro Gaital.

John Trujillo, the regional director of MiAmbiente in Coclé, emphasized the importance of keeping these natural access points clear. He also issued a strong appeal to both citizens and corporations, urging them to adhere to environmental regulations. Trujillo warned that actions such as improper land appropriation, illegal logging, and unauthorized burning could lead to significant administrative penalties and criminal prosecution.

MiAmbiente reiterated its prohibition against occupying, invading, fencing, constructing, or conducting unauthorized activities within protected areas. This includes land appropriation, illegal construction, and logging for residential or commercial purposes in national parks and reserves. The ministry has the authority to impose administrative fines of up to $9,999.99 for proven invasions or environmental damage. Depending on the severity of the offense, cases may be referred to the Environmental Prosecutor's Office for investigation into potential crimes against natural resources.

Maintaining the accesses to these natural areas completely free is fundamental to facilitate the movement of park rangers and the development of patrol, surveillance, and protection tasks that are carried out permanently in the Cerro Gaital Natural Monument.
