Erasmus Mundus scholarship beneficiaries urged to return home after studies

Ghanaian students selected for the 2026 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Programme have been encouraged by the European Union to embrace new cultures, build international networks, and return home equipped with skills vital for Ghana's development. This advice was shared at a pre-departure orientation in Accra.

EU Ambassador Rune Skinnebach congratulated the students, highlighting their selection as a testament to their hard work. He emphasized that studying in Europe offers more than just a degree, promoting personal growth, cultural exchange, and strengthening Ghana-Europe relations. Drawing from his own experience, he urged students to be curious, ambitious, and open to new experiences.

Since 2014, the Erasmus+ program has benefited 3,618 Ghanaian students and academic staff. In 2026 alone, 446 Ghanaians were selected across various mobility schemes, with 28 students admitted to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Programme, 14 receiving full scholarships. The EU continues to promote educational exchanges through initiatives like the Global Gateway Youth Mobility for Africa.

Ms. Sandra Retzer, Country Director of GIZ Ghana, also congratulated the awardees, urging them to maximize the opportunity for academic and cultural enrichment. She shared her personal experience of studying in China, noting how adapting to a new environment shaped her career and encouraged students to view challenges as learning opportunities.
