Erkki Ormala, Researcher of Innovation Systems, Dies at 75

Dr. Erkki Ormala, a respected figure in Finland's innovation landscape, passed away in Helsinki on May 6, 2026, at the age of 75. Known for his cheerful disposition, broad knowledge, and social adeptness, Ormala contributed to the nation's innovation system across three distinct spheres: research, government, and business. Ormala's academic journey included studies in political history and industrial management, culminating in a doctorate in technology. His career began as an operations researcher at Ahlström Oy before he moved to the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland as a special researcher. During this period, he also spent time as a visiting researcher at Stanford University and the IIASA institute in Austria. A key turning point came in 1987 when Ormala was appointed chief planner for the Finnish Council of Science and Technology. In this role, he was instrumental in shaping Finland's research and innovation funding models during a period of economic downturn and subsequent recovery, providing evidence-based insights and policy recommendations to three successive governments. In 1999, Ormala joined Nokia as a director responsible for the business environment, focusing on long-term global development trends. This position involved numerous advisory roles, including for the European Commission. After leaving Nokia, Aalto University, where Ormala had also played a role in its establishment, appointed him as a professor of practice in innovation management in 2013. He led numerous research projects during this time. Ormala returned to government advisory work in 2018, assessing Finland's innovation system and recommending improvements. His report expressed deep concern for Finland's competitiveness and was well-received across society. Colleagues remember Erkki Ormala as calm, conscientious, intelligent, curious, and consistently friendly. His extensive reading and experience gave him a unique ability to understand diverse perspectives and demonstrate how collaboration leads to better outcomes. He was a supportive, humane, and engaging supervisor.
