Escaped ostrich causes traffic chaos, apprehended by police and owner

An escaped ostrich led police and residents on a dramatic chase through Longtan District, Taiwan, after it broke free from its farm and wandered onto a busy road. The incident occurred on the evening of August 8, causing a spectacle for onlookers.

The ostrich, reportedly startled, ran directly into a car driven by a 60-year-old woman, significantly denting its hood. Responding officers from the Shimen Police Station, along with police academy interns, arrived at the scene. They were joined by the ostrich's owner, who had been contacted by authorities.

Together, the group embarked on a challenging pursuit to apprehend the agitated bird. After considerable effort, intern Jiang Zongxun managed to grab the ostrich, and with the help of others, they successfully subdued and returned it to the farm. The owner expressed gratitude for the police's swift assistance and pledged to manage the ostrich more carefully, also promising to handle compensation for the damaged vehicle.

Police issued a reminder to animal owners about the importance of proper containment to prevent animals from causing traffic disruptions. They noted that allowing animals to roam freely on roads can lead to fines and potentially severe civil and criminal liabilities if accidents occur.
