Tourist's wallet stolen while watching sea turtles on Xiaoliuqiu Island

A tourist's night of admiring sea turtles on Taiwan's Xiaoliuqiu Island turned into a distressing experience when she discovered her wallet had been stolen from her parked scooter. The woman had left her scooter unattended near Zhongao Beach, a popular spot for night viewing of marine life.

According to reports, the tourist, identified by her birth year as 1984, was with friends around midnight on August 7th. After parking her scooter and leaving the keys in the ignition, she went to watch the turtles. Upon returning to her vehicle, she found that the cash from her wallet, which was placed on the front of the scooter, had been taken.

She later posted online about the incident, expressing surprise and disappointment, stating, "I thought Xiaoliuqiu was safe, but I was wrong!" The incident has prompted a police investigation, with authorities reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area to identify the perpetrator.

Police confirmed that this is the third reported case of theft from scooters on Xiaoliuqiu between July and August. They have formed a special task force to investigate and apprehend those responsible. Authorities are urging tourists and locals alike to exercise caution, emphasizing the importance of removing keys and locking scooters when leaving them unattended, even for short periods. They also advise carrying valuables and cash at all times, rather than leaving them in the scooter's storage compartments or on the front platform.

The police are actively working to solve these cases and prevent further incidents, aiming to ensure that visitors can enjoy their trips to the island without experiencing such unfortunate events.
