Espanyol and Sevilla settle for a frantic 1-1 draw

Espanyol rescued a frantic 1-1 draw against Sevilla with a goal from Marcos Fernández in the 98th minute, after the visitors had taken the lead while playing with 10 men.

Sevilla were reduced to 10 players in the 58th minute when Senegalese defender Arouna Sangante was sent off for a challenge from behind on Roberto Fernández. Sevilla strongly protested, arguing that Sangante had touched the ball.

Espanyol appeared to take advantage when Omar El Hilali scored from the edge of the area four minutes later, connecting with a precise cross from Javi Hernández. The goal did not stand after a VAR review ruled it offside.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Sevilla continued attacking and moved ahead in the 85th minute. Lucas Stassin pounced on a poor clearance inside the area after a throw-in. Espanyol then spent the nine minutes of added time sending crosses into the visitors’ penalty area, and academy player Marcos Fernández finally leveled the match when the clock had entered the 98th minute.

The hosts had created the clearer early chances, while Sevilla finished the first half as the more dominant side. Espanyol brought on Bryan Zaragoza to sharpen the attack, but could not break through until the final moments.
