Filipe Luis and Roma lead in Europe as Karius inspires Schalke and City, Arsenal battle for top spot

The early European season has already produced a surprise in Germany: Bayern Munich no longer leads the Bundesliga. A 0-0 draw at Schalke, secured in part by two decisive saves from Loris Karius, ended a run in which the Bavarian side had topped the table for 67 consecutive matchdays since September 1, 2024.

In France, Filipe Luis has made an immediate impact with Monaco. The team is the only one among the league's 18 clubs to win all three matches, and its latest victory carried particular weight. Monaco came from behind to beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 at the Parc des Princes.

The result also exposed PSG's poor start. Luis Enrique Martínez's team has not won in three league matches and has already lost the French Super Cup. It has two points from nine in the league, seven behind Monaco, and sits 14th with the Champions League approaching on Wednesday. Monaco's finishing proved decisive: it scored twice from 0.51 expected goals, while PSG scored once from 2.24.

Serie A also saw late drama at the top. Inter recovered from a 2-0 deficit against Napoli, with Lautaro Martínez scoring twice and Marcus Thuram adding another goal. Roma took first place by overturning Atalanta in the final minutes, as Mario Hermoso equalized in the 89th minute and Matías Soulé scored the winner in the 92nd.

Milan missed the chance to stay perfect after Federico Gatti equalized for Juventus in the 92nd minute, cancelling Alphadjo Cissé's 69th-minute opener. Both teams have seven points, level with Como, which won 4-1 at Genoa. In England, Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1, leaving the Gunners and Manchester City with nine points from three matches.
