Estonia's Eesti Energia Opens New Oil Plant, Reaching Production Capacity

Eesti Energia officially opened its new Enefit 280-2 oil plant in Auvere on August 27, marking a significant milestone in the company's long-term investment program. The plant has successfully reached its planned production capacity during its startup phase, having already produced 15,000 tons of shale oil since its first output in April.

Lauri Karp, chairman of Enefit Industry, stated that the successful launch of Enefit 280-2 signifies the completion of a major investment aimed at increasing oil production volume and efficiency. The company's immediate focus is now on achieving stable and reliable production at full capacity by the autumn.

The primary product of the Enefit 280-2 plant is low-sulfur oil, destined for the international market as a component for marine fuels. At stable capacity, the plant is projected to produce approximately 250,000 tons of shale oil annually. This production is seen as vital for local fuel supply, especially during crises, and reinforces Estonia's position as a country with low energy import dependency within the European Union.

Utilizing the Enefit 280 technology, the new plant efficiently processes all extracted shale, including fine particles. It also generates high-calorific value gas, used in energy production, making the entire process highly energy-efficient. The Enefit 280-2 plant complements the existing Enefit 140 and Enefit 280-1 plants at Auvere, boosting Eesti Energia's total annual shale oil production capacity to 700,000 tons. The investment in Enefit 280-2, decided in spring 2020 and built starting in 2021, totals over 380 million euros and will employ around 150 people.
