Hundreds of Millions Invested in Estonian Railways, Yet Travel Time Barely Shortens

Despite substantial investments totaling hundreds of millions of euros in railway modernization, train travel times between Estonia's capital, Tallinn, and the city of Tartu have seen only marginal improvements. The introduction of new Škoda trains on the line was expected to significantly cut journey durations.

Elron, the national railway operator, acknowledges the limited impact on travel time thus far. While the line is receiving new rolling stock and infrastructure upgrades, the full benefits of these investments are yet to be realized. The company anticipates that more substantial reductions in travel time will become apparent in the coming years.

The ongoing upgrades aim to enhance the efficiency and speed of the railway network. However, passengers currently experience only minor time savings, a situation that is expected to change as further phases of the modernization project are completed.
