Etimesgut Mayor, 55 others detained in Turkish corruption probe

Etimesgut Mayor Erdal Beşikçioğlu is among 55 individuals detained as part of a corruption investigation targeting the municipality. The operation, launched on the morning of July 30, saw the arrest of municipal officials and company representatives.

The Ankara West Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated the investigation based on allegations of irregularities in municipal tenders, the creation of false documents, and illicit financial gains related to parking lot rentals and construction projects. Reports from the Court of Accounts, witness testimonies, and analyses of financial transactions formed the basis for the detentions.

Beşikçioğlu, along with 42 municipal employees and 13 company officials, faces charges including forming and leading a criminal organization, membership in an organization, embezzlement, bribery, extortion, and bid rigging. Simultaneous operations were conducted across nine provinces, with Ankara as the central hub, to apprehend the suspects.

Following health checks at Gazi Mustafa Kemal Vocational and Environmental Diseases Hospital, Mayor Beşikçioğlu and the other 54 suspects were transferred to police headquarters and subsequently presented to the courthouse. The investigation aims to uncover and prosecute alleged corrupt practices within the Etimesgut municipality.
