EU Activates Copernicus Satellite System for Nepal Flood Mapping

The European Union has activated the Copernicus satellite system to assess the damage caused by severe floods in Nepal. The initiative aims to map the areas hardest hit by the devastating inundation, which has tragically claimed at least 95 lives and left more than 400 people unaccounted for.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen conveyed solidarity with those affected, particularly the families grieving loved ones or anxiously awaiting news. She affirmed the EU's readiness to mobilize additional assistance for Nepal during this critical time. The EU's mission in Nepal, in conjunction with several European embassies, urged residents in affected districts like Rasuwa and Nuwakot to heed local authorities' guidance and safety recommendations.

Devastating floods have hit communities in Nepal and China. My thoughts are with all those affected, especially the families who have lost loved ones or who are still waiting for news. We also share a thought for the brave first responders.

Commissioner for Equality, Crisis Management, and Preparedness, Hadja Lahbib, echoed these sentiments, noting that EU partners are already on the ground providing support. Adding to the international concern, Nepal confirmed that two Spanish nationals are among the hundreds of foreigners reported missing following the catastrophic flooding. The situation remains dynamic as rescue and assessment efforts continue.
