EU and Ukraine sign drone deal, von der Leyen announces

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a new "Drone Deal" between the European Union and Ukraine on Wednesday in Kyiv. She emphasized Ukraine's unique and valuable experience in drone technology, from manufacturing to operational use.

What we are signing today is our own 'Drone Deal'.

"The knowledge you have acquired in the use of drones and anti-drone defense systems is truly unique," von der Leyen stated, addressing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She stressed the importance of leveraging this expertise collaboratively, covering everything from technology and supply chains to radar systems and sensors.

The knowledge you have acquired in the use of drones and anti-drone defense systems is truly unique. From drone technologies and manufacturing to the supply chains needed to maintain production capacity and, vitally, the knowledge of how to use radar systems, ground stations or sensors. We must leverage this experience together.

During the same event, Zelenskyy presented von der Leyen with Ukraine's first Order of Europe, a state decoration. He lauded her "outstanding personal merits in supporting Ukraine's strategic course towards obtaining full membership in the European Union" and her significant contribution to strengthening Ukraine's defense and European security.

It is a great honor to present Ursula today with the first Ukrainian Order of Europe. Dear Ursula, this is an award that no one can ever annul or take away from you. Because Ukraine's word is firm.

Von der Leyen expressed gratitude for Zelenskyy's belief in Ukraine's aspirations. The agreement signifies a deepening of defense industry cooperation between the EU and Ukraine, building on similar drone-related agreements Ukraine has recently made with other nations.
