EU concerned by Russia's integration of Georgian territories on war anniversary

The European Union has voiced significant concern regarding Russia's escalating attempts to integrate the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia into its own legal and security framework. This heightened integration effort comes as Georgia marks the 18th anniversary of the 2008 war with Russia.

A spokesperson for the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy stated that agreements like the one signed on May 9 between Russia and South Ossetia, along with the appointment of a Russian official as the acting "president" of the region, are invalid under international law. The EU reiterated its condemnation of Russia's recognition of these occupied territories.

The 2008 conflict, which erupted on August 7, continues to undermine Georgia's security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, with persistent humanitarian consequences. The EU emphasized that Russia's ongoing military presence in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, without the consent of the Georgian government, violates international law and Russia's obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement.

Over the past 18 years, residents of these regions have faced significant humanitarian challenges and human rights violations, including restrictions on movement and illegal detentions. Obstacles also remain for internally displaced persons and refugees seeking to return to their homes. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict and its unwavering support for Georgia's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
