EU pledges 2.1 million euros in aid to Colombia after deadly earthquake

The European Union is mobilizing 2.1 million euros in aid to support Colombia in the aftermath of a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that has caused widespread devastation and significant loss of life. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the aid, emphasizing the EU's solidarity with Colombia as search and rescue operations continue.

The substantial financial assistance is earmarked to cover the immediate and critical needs of those affected by the disaster. This includes essential supplies such as medical equipment, safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation items, as well as provisions for temporary shelter, food, protective measures, and direct financial aid to affected families.

Colombia has activated the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism, a framework that enables member states to coordinate and pool resources effectively for disaster response. This activation facilitates a more streamlined and efficient delivery of aid. Furthermore, the EU has deployed its Copernicus satellite service to assist rescue teams on the ground by providing crucial data for damage assessment and supporting ongoing search and rescue efforts.

The earthquake, which has tragically claimed the lives of at least 216 people and injured hundreds more, has left a trail of destruction across several cities, including Cali, Pereira, Manizales, and Quibdó. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate survivors trapped beneath the rubble. European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, stated that the EU has been present from the "very first hours" of the crisis, supporting efforts to rapidly assess needs and dispatch urgent humanitarian assistance. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also expressed Europe's solidarity, acknowledging the extremely difficult times the country is enduring.
