EU seeks deeper ties with Southeast Asia to diversify trade

The European Union is actively pursuing a strategy to deepen its relationships with Southeast Asian nations, aiming to diversify its global trade partnerships. Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Policy, stated in Manila that the bloc is committed to becoming an increasingly active and reliable partner for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The EU has long been a reliable partner for ASEAN. It is now becoming an increasingly active partner, and this will only increase as our partnership grows.

This commitment is being demonstrated through concrete actions. The EU recently elevated its relationship with Vietnam to a comprehensive strategic partnership and plans to replicate this pact with the Philippines, which currently holds the rotating ASEAN presidency. Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy, is also slated for a similar upgrade later in the year. Kallas emphasized that these "three bilateral upgrades in a matter of months" are not coincidental but signal a clear intention to deepen the EU-ASEAN relationship in practice, not just in word.

Beyond political partnerships, the EU is also solidifying economic ties. Brussels has signed free trade agreements with Indonesia, India, and Australia, adding to existing pacts with Singapore, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand. Bilateral trade in goods between the EU and ASEAN reached nearly 275 billion euros in 2025, positioning Southeast Asia as the EU's third-largest trading partner outside Europe.

The conflicts in the Middle East have destabilized global energy markets, and the consequences will persist.

Kallas also addressed global geopolitical challenges, highlighting the impact of Middle Eastern conflicts on world energy markets and urging ASEAN nations to support Ukraine. She called on Russia to cease hostilities and engage in sincere negotiations for a lasting peace, a plea directed at countries within ASEAN that maintain strong ties with Moscow.
