Europe Hit by Severe Storms and Hail; Croatia Braces for Unstable Weather

Europe is currently grappling with a series of powerful storms that have unleashed heavy rain, destructive hail, and even tornadoes across several countries. Switzerland and Italy experienced severe storms with abundant rainfall and high winds, while a tornado caused significant damage to hundreds of homes in southwestern France. Central Europe, from France through the Alps to Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Poland, has been under increased risk of severe thunderstorms, large hail, and flash floods.

The dramatic weather shifts have disrupted daily life and infrastructure. In Switzerland, 27 flights were canceled in and out of Zurich due to storms on Friday. Simultaneously, the United Kingdom faced floods and traffic disruptions following heavy rainfall after an exceptionally dry and warm summer. These events highlight the volatile atmospheric conditions currently affecting the continent.

The change in weather is arriving at a time when powerful storms have already hit numerous parts of Europe in recent days.

Croatia is now anticipating a change in its weather pattern, moving away from a period of very warm days. While heat will slightly decrease on Saturday, the atmosphere remains unstable, with potential for strong downpours and thunderstorms in some areas. The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) has issued warnings, particularly for the Adriatic coast, where a red alert is in effect due to the dangerous combination of high temperatures and the risk of severe storms, posing a significant threat to health, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly, chronically ill, and children.

Looking ahead, Sunday is expected to be sunnier, though instability may persist. Inland areas will likely see sunny weather with occasional local showers, while the Adriatic coast is predicted to remain predominantly sunny and hot. Meteorologists caution that the interaction between warm, humid air and cooler air masses creates a heightened risk of atmospheric instability, underscoring the potential for severe weather events across the region.
