European Aquatics Championships: Wesemann defends 1m springboard title, Pfeif/Wassen take silver

Moritz Wesemann has reclaimed his European Championship title in the 1-meter springboard diving event, securing gold for Germany at the championships held in Paris. The 24-year-old athlete successfully defended his 2023 title, marking a significant achievement on the second day of the competition.

Wesemann delivered a commanding performance, earning 431.45 points. He finished with a substantial lead of 13.20 points over his closest competitor, Jack Laugher of Great Britain. Jordan Houlden, another British diver, finished further behind with a deficit of 21.15 points.

Earlier in the competition, the German synchronized diving duo Pauline Pfeif and Elena Wassen also achieved success, winning a silver medal in the tower event. They finished just behind the British pair Maisie Bond and Lois Toulson.

Despite facing challenges, including a painful shoulder injury and disappointment from a previous mixed team event, Wesemann demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill. He consistently placed among the medal contenders from the very first dive. His final dive, which featured the highest degree of difficulty, was executed almost flawlessly, earning him the crucial high scores needed for victory. Pfeif and Wassen also performed strongly, largely avoiding errors, particularly on their most difficult third dive, a feat matched only by the British gold medalists.
